FD01 Toronto Revitalization – A New Life Celebrating an Industrial Past |
| Evergreen Brick Works |
Across North America, derelict industrial sites are being transformed into new mixed use communities that celebrate our proud industrial heritage. Toronto has its share of successes and this tour will showcase three exciting examples.
- Evergreen has transformed the former Don Valley Brick Works from a collection of deteriorating heritage buildings into Evergreen Brick Works - a community environmental centre and international showcase for urban sustainability and green design
- Artscape has transformed the historic Wychwood streetcar repair barns into the Artscape Wychwood Barns – a 60,000 sq. ft. multifaceted community centre where arts and culture, environmental leadership, heritage preservation, urban agriculture and affordable housing are brought together to foster a strong sense of community, and
- the Distillery District is an internationally acclaimed village of brick-lined streets and dozens of vibrantly restored Victorian Industrial buildings - It’s one of Toronto’s hottest tourist attractions and home to live theatres, galleries, fashion, design and jewelry boutiques, unique cafes and award-winning restaurants.
FD02 Red, Wine and Green: Experience Niagara’s Wine Region |
| Southbrook Vineyards |
Niagara is one of Canada’s most beautiful and significant regions, particularly in regard to tourism and agriculture. With its moderate climate, Niagara is the perfect area for grape growing, as well as outdoor activities. First, visit Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Southbrook Vineyards – an organic, LEED Gold winery designed by one of Canada’s premier architects, Jack Diamond – and Stratus Vineyards – the first LEED Canada certified building and one of Canada’s premier wine brands. The final stop is Flat Rock Cellars, a five-level, gravity flow winery housed in an architecturally unique hexagonal building. En route, discuss the best practices and technologies from 100 LEED-certified projects from across Canada with Michael Pires of Enermodal Engineering and learn about Sustainable Winemaking Ontario, a proactive self-audit program, with Regina Foisey from the Wine Council of Ontario.
