Greenbuild 2012 Master Series Sessions

Shakespeare tells us, The past is prologue. What’s next is up to us.
If our goal is to create buildings that perform better in all ways, how do we get there with the current rating system? LEEDv4 takes many steps toward building performance, but what will the future of LEED look like if it is based completely on performance? To understand this we need to examine the nature of performance. The three LEED Master Series sessions will focus on how LEED supports building performance and what building performance has in common with all types of performance. The sessions will examine how great performance always includes learning, feedback, technique and outcome.

A04: LEED = Performance, Learning and Feedback

This session will focus on the steps needed to get started with performance. How do you prepare to perform? What are great examples of feedback mechanisms that lead to better performance? The session will focus on the LEED Performance Dashboard concept and the ideas behind continuous, dynamic certification.

F04: LEED = Performance, Practice and Technique

Once you have feedback, how do you change behavior? The musician, dancer and athlete all struggle against muscle memory and patterns of habit. Building occupants and managers struggle with the same things. How do we change these patterns to create great performance? Design and feedback help, but it also requires practice and technique. Both innovation and determination also are essential. This session will review lessons from all types of practice and technique that can lead to building performance and LEED achievement.

H04: LEED = Performance, Outcome and Applause
4:30-5:30pm, Thursday November 15

The outcome of a great building is high performance. This means that people are happier, and energy, water, air and waste are all integrated into a greater whole. This session will show examples of great performance, including those in nature that can inform and guide accomplishments in building projects.

E04: Innovations for Affordability and Accessibility

Join Randy Fiser, CEO of the American Society of Interior Design, as he moderates a dialogue between manufacturers and designers about the role of each group to bring about ongoing innovations in manufacturing and those needed to make sustainable products affordable and readily available. Only then will these products and technologies be accessible to ALL schools, homes, offices and healthcare facilities.

While cities only occupy 2 percent of the world’s landmass, they consume over two-thirds of the world’s energy and account for more than 70 percent of global carbon emissions. Cities play an integral role in addressing the impacts of the built environment and global resource use. Cities around the world are embracing this opportunity and are leading the way through innovative sustainability policy. We will hear from city leaders on how they are developing programs and leveraging policy to green the built environment and their communities for generation to come.
