Guidance for Using District Heating and Cooling in LEEDs EA Section
LEED requirements for the Energy & Atmosphere section are straightforward for individual buildings with dedicated local heating and cooling systems. Historically it has been less clear how to treat LEED for buildings connected to district networks for heating or cooling. This caused ambiguity for LEED building project teams and owners who either own a district system (university or corporate campuses, military installations) or purchase district energy from a third-party supplier (municipal or utility networks). In early 2008 USGBC clarified the LEED requirements for district-heated or cooled buildings. This session will describe the new guidance and how to use it in LEED projects.

Green Schools: Rearing the Sustainability Native
Perhaps the greatest opportunity presented by green schools is the opportunity to educate true “sustainability natives” – students fluent in the language of green and well-equipped to take on the challenge of global climate change. Yet for many, utilizing the school facility as a teaching tool poses the greatest challenge. Hear about a school that used curriculum goals to inform building design instead of vice versa; from a teacher who is educating future green leaders; and from an architect and educator who are promoting environmental literacy through the integration of sustainability concepts into both the built environment and educational programming.

100 Days Out Session
The Presidential Climate Action Project has produced a 100-day plan for the next president to jump-start federal leadership on energy security and climate change. PCAP’s plan is the most comprehensive yet created to deal with these two crises. Its preliminary document, issued in December 2007, contained more than 300 distinct proposals for actions the President could take under his own authority, as well as proposals for Congress. PCAP is a two-year, $2 million initiative of the University of Colorado Denver. Its goals are aggressive – for example, zero-carbon buildings by 2025=2030, a CAFÉ standard of 50 mpg by 2025, 30% renewable electricity by 2025, a 30% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020 -- but PCAP argues that bold action, well beyond a cap-and-auction bill, is needed to meet the twin challenges of energy and climate. Members of the PCAP team will be involved in two Greenbuild sessions. In the first, they’ll give an overview of the presidential action plan; in the second, they’ll solicit public comment.
